Integrated Psychiatric Care (often referred to as Dual-Diagnosis Treatment) is the simultaneous clinical management of substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions, such as clinical depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. Rather than treating addiction in isolation, our consultant psychiatrists and clinical psychologists address the root psychiatric triggers.

Who Needs This Program?

This program is essential for individuals who:

  • Use alcohol or drugs to "self-medicate" underlying mental health struggles, panic attacks, or chronic mood swings.
  • Have been previously diagnosed with a clinical psychiatric condition alongside an addiction.
  • Experience persistent anxiety, paranoia, or depression even after they have successfully stopped using substances.

Program Period

Continuous throughout the residential stay (90 days), followed by scheduled outpatient psychiatric management during transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

A dual-diagnosis is when a patient experiences both a mental health condition (such as clinical depression) and a substance use disorder at the same time. Both must be treated simultaneously for recovery to be effective.

No. Psychiatric medications are only prescribed when clinically necessary to balance brain chemistry, ease severe withdrawal cravings, or manage co-occurring mental illnesses. Our psychiatrists monitor and adjust doses carefully.

No. Under Kenyan medical regulations, medications are evaluated and prescribed solely by our licensed medical doctors and consultant psychiatrists. Our clinical psychologists specialize in non-pharmacological behavioral therapies (CBT).

At New Horizons, psychiatric care is fully integrated. Your psychiatrist works in tandem with your dedicated addiction counselor to ensure your physical and psychological treatments are perfectly aligned.

Our comprehensive clinical intake assessment at admission includes a full psychiatric evaluation designed to distinguish between chemical dependency and underlying psychiatric conditions.
